Scientific Publishing and Generative AI

Generative AI is rapidly changing how research is conducted, communicated, and evaluated. In this presentation, Sonja Bjelobaba explores how AI can amplify existing threats to research integrity, including paper mills, fabricated citations, duplicate publications, and the spread of low-quality research. The talk connects these challenges to broader concerns raised in the Stockholm Declaration about the growing commercialization of science and the need to prioritize quality over quantity in research assessment. If AI makes it easier than ever to produce scientific texts, what will originality, authorship, and scientific merit mean in the future? Rather than focusing solely on technology, the presentation argues for transparency, clear guidelines, and a renewed commitment to the core values of reliable and trustworthy research.

Sonja Bjelobaba is Director of the Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics (CRB) and Researcher in Research Integrity at Uppsala University. She is also Senior Lecturer in Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian at the Department of Modern Languages. Her research focuses on research integrity, academic integrity, publication ethics, and the impact of generative AI on research, scientific publishing, and higher education. She has developed modular courses in research integrity for researchers and doctoral students at Uppsala University. Bjelobaba holds a PhD in Slavonic Languages from the University of Gothenburg. Between 2020 and 2023, she coordinated the Erasmus+ strategic partnership project BRIDGE – Bridging Integrity in Higher Education, Business and Society (2020-1-SE01-KA203-077973).
