This poster presents the role of the Centre for Electronic Publishing (CEN) at the University of Rijeka as a community-oriented infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication and digital education practices. Established within the University of Rijeka Library, CEN focuses on providing support to academic and teaching staff in the preparation and publication of various electronic editions, thereby strengthening institutional publishing capacities.

CEN offers a range of services related to the design, layout, and production of digital publications, including scientific and professional books, textbooks, and teaching materials. These services include the preparation of publications in PDF and EPUB formats, with the possibility of export to HTML, as well as graphic design, technical review of materials, and assistance in ensuring compliance with selected citation styles. In addition, CEN supports the digitisation of print publications issued by the university. These publications are authored by current and former university staff who have granted permission for their works to be digitised and deposited in the institutional repository, thereby contributing to their wider accessibility and long-term preservation.

Furthermore, CEN provides assistance in developing interactive electronic teaching materials, with the aim of enhancing and facilitating teaching and learning processes. Such materials go beyond static text and images, incorporating multimedia and interactive elements such as video content, 3D models, hyperlinks, and self-assessment tools. This approach supports more engaging and flexible learning environments, while also enabling teachers to adapt content to different pedagogical needs. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the accessibility of educational materials, including their adaptation for students with specific learning difficulties. In addition, these materials can be exported and made available in a variety of formats, allowing for their use across different platforms and learning contexts.

The availability of centralized support for the creation of multimedia and interactive educational content offers academic staff an optional institutional resource that complements existing faculty-based practices. The primary aim of this service is to ease the technical aspects of publishing digital educational materials, allowing teaching staff to focus more on content development and pedagogical design. This model enables more efficient use of available resources, supports consistent quality standards, and provides structured professional and technical assistance to those who choose to use the service.

CEN contributes to aligning publishing practices with strategic priorities related to digital transformation, innovation in education, and the accessibility of knowledge. By embedding publishing support within the academic environment, CEN reflects principles of community ownership and governance, where scholarly outputs are developed and managed within the institution.

The poster will present the number and types of publications produced with CEN support over the past five years, including their distribution across different categories of electronic editions. It will also include usage data, providing insight into the reach and impact of these publications. The poster will also showcase selected examples of interactive textbook content, illustrating the possibilities of multimedia and interactive educational publishing supported by CEN. Additionally, it will examine the alignment of CEN’s activities with the university’s strategic framework and highlight its role in the development of the planned UNIRI Press platform as a centralized digital publishing environment, aimed at integrating and increasing the visibility of the university’s publishing output.
